The Ethanol Imperative for Viksit Bharat
Why ethanol blending is central to India's energy transition, rural incomes and import-bill reduction.
India's ethanol blending programme has emerged as a strategic lever for energy security, farmer income and environmental goals. Achieving 20% blending by 2026 will substantially cut crude imports and create rural value chains.
Triple Dividend
The programme delivers a triple dividend: lower oil-import dependence, higher farmer remuneration through diversified feedstock such as maize and damaged grains, and reduced vehicular emissions. However, water-stressed regions must avoid sugarcane-led feedstock expansion.
Way Forward
A balanced feedstock mix, modernised distilleries and assured offtake will determine long-term viability. Policy must also align with food-security imperatives.
